I always say the best things in life are free, and if we’re lucky, already in our closet! With summer at our doorstep, and a fury of new summer looks gracing the pages of magazines, online fashion blogs, and style sites like ours, it can all be a little overwhelming. What’s hot, what’s not, what’s in, what needs to hit the bin, how do we keep up with it all? At the end of the day, if all else fails, just go back to the basics, as in, your run-of-the-mill basic and plain white t-shirt! The t-shirt is without question one of the most underrated pieces in our wardrobe, and chances are, we probably already have a few of them kicking around so we don’t need to go out an blow more money. But what can you do with a t-shirt that’s so exciting, right? Plenty! Here are five great outfit ideas that will convince you a plain t-shirt can become your greatest fashion ally.
Kickin’ it Casual Style
Fridays may be the only day of the week we get to go casual, but that doesn’t mean you have to look like you just rolled out of bed. Fridays in my house are known as the fuss-free fashion days. It’s the day of the week I’m most likely to go for after-work cocktails with my girlfriends, so I’m a huge fan of using layers and statement jewelry to pull my look together. I’ll pair my favorite plain white t-shirt with some skinny jeans with a contrast belt, throw on a boyfriend blazer, some embellished flats and accessorize with eye-popping bangles to create what I like to call my ‘Kickin’ it Casual’ look.
Take it to the Streets
Leather is and will forever be a go to for any wardrobe. Like the plain white t-shirt, it’s one of those staples that transcends time, and transitions seamlessly into every season under the sun. If you’re in the mood for something a little edgier, get your street on by dressing up a plain white tee with all the makings of a street diva. Make sure your jacket is fitted, with as much or as little embellishments as you want. The more hardware your jacket has, the more dated it looks, but you can always go with what’s trending. Go extra street with some studded motorcycle boots or keep it more demure with a hot pair of booties or ballet flats for contrast.
I often feel that the simplest of looks are the most elegant, and have the greatest impact. A plain white t-shirt with a pleated skirt is hands down one of my favorite looks for a number of reasons. The first being it’s dead easy for me to accessorize the heck out of this look if I want to. A beautiful gold statement necklace, a pair of shoulder dusting earrings, an outrageous large contrasting clutch, it doesn’t really matter, because the look is so simple and chic, it’s almost impossible to get it wrong!
I’ve always thought a beautiful long maxi skirt had the power to make a statement like no other, yet, it’s one of the most under-appreciated fashion pieces, much like the plain white t-shirt. A drapey maxi skirt, especially in a beautiful sorbet tone like the one pictured here, paired with a simple t-shirt, and some metallic accessories inspires a look of sophistication, timeless elegance and demonstrates the kind of style savvy most women covet.
If you’re on the hunt for an alternative look for work or play, this is a great option. The key to making a plain white t-shirt pop is by pairing with items that fit your body well, are well made and convince the observer that a simple white tee can look just as couture as a silk blouse. Think of your t-shirt as a base coat of pain on a canvas, and everything you wear on top creates depth, shows creativity and above all, an appreciation for the basics.
